Center Stage carries its share of reviews, all right (two on most weeks),
and it's working on pages that include casting notices and your letters.
Heck, maybe it'll even be a print publication someday.
While things heat up, though, you
might want to take a look at sites
like Theatermania.com and
Americantheaterweb.com -- these
are great pages on the theater
scene nationwide and will orient
you to the best of the best. As
well, you can click on the Useful
links button for a list of area
groups and the state of the art
they reflect. That living archive
doesn't get any smaller, after all.
To put it another way: Every patron of live theater, however
figuratively, is a member of every cast and crew ever to mount a
show. That's because the theater, for better or worse, is the record
of man's story. It's expensive to go to plays these days, and it's no
less costly to produce 'em -- but if we're at all curious about the state
of ourselves (and most of us are), we'll agree that no art form
speaks to that curiosity with more impact and relevance.
Martin Jones Westlin, San Diego CityBeat theater editor and a
performer/director/patron whose theater experience spans all but his
first 17 years, thinks Center Stage is an ideal platform for cool
discussion about San Diego's take on that art form. He founded it in
February of 2007 after gathering input from several factions -- the
consensus is that local theater's trade sector could stand some
publicity and that you just might come along for the ride.
Locally, it undergoes wholesale expansion amid input from people like jazz maven Tokeli, a performing arts fixture in the region. Tokeli's specialty is musical theater -- she holds a master's degree in the field from Boston's Tufts University and heads the drama department at Imperial Beach's Mar Vista High School. Se'll also figure prominently into this site's podcast effort (click on the link for more). Technical advisor Mike Scully is as earnest a theatergoer as you'll find -- and the fact that he lives in performance-rich Seattle doesn't hurt. He's been a computer language whiz since the Commodore 64 days, and his advice has been instrumental in the launch of this site and the realization of its potential. Among the three of us, and the many guests we'll feature at our Offstage! page, we should be able to fashion a pretty decent site -- one tailored to your informational needs and artistic expectations. Center Stage San Diego! is all about theater -- and theater is all about you.
